When Ashwini Selvakumaran reflects on her Western experience, it’s clear that donors changed her life.

“Donors encouraged me to show up for every young person who’s ever been told they don’t belong.”

A 2024 graduate of the master of environment and sustainability program, as a student Ashwini experienced financial struggle that impacted her academic performance. “I commuted to campus from out of town and had important volunteer commitments. Finding the time for a part-time job felt impossible.”

A fierce social justice advocate, community builder and policy advisor at Ontario Ministry of Health, Ashwini is making an indelible mark on the world. Since graduation, she has represented Canada at the 2025 G20 Youth Summit in South Africa, where she influenced global policy on climate action, social justice and economic equity. She has also served on several youth advisory committees – elevating marginalized voices and enacting meaningful change.

“Donors encouraged me to show up for every young person who’s ever been told they don’t belong,” she says. “As someone who grew up surrounded by poverty and inequality, it’s incredible that donors recognize students like me.”

For Ashwini, donor giving reinforces the values her parents taught her from a young age. “Philanthropy is an act of kindness that has an immeasurable positive impact on others,” she emphasizes. “Western graduates do amazing things, and donor support makes that possible. Their generosity is integral to our success.”
